Coach Hawley to be Inducted into KSHSAA Hall of Fame
We are excited to announce that our very own Dave Hawley has been selected as one of five individuals in the state for induction into the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame Class of 2025. Coach Hawley’s award will be presented this coming spring in conjunction with the Boys State Tennis Championship. We will also celebrate this incredible honor at our annual Homecoming Weekend, October 10th.
Coach Hawley led our Wichita Collegiate boys and girls tennis program for 42 years. During his time at the helm, the teams won 59 state championships between the two programs (33 girls; 26 boys). This set a national record as the most state titles won by one coach. The success throughout his tenure wasn’t limited to team accolades. In addition to those 59 titles, Hawley produced 82 singles and doubles state champions in the boys and girls divisions.
Coach Hawley is no stranger to being recognized for his contributions to the sport, having been named the Kansas Boys Tennis Coach of the Year by the Kansas Coaches Association in 1997 and 2016, and then receiving the same honor for girls tennis in 2005. In 2017 he was named the 4A Boys Coach of the Year and was the 4A Girls Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2016. Nationally, he was named the USTA High School Coach of the Year and was part of the National High School Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame inaugural class in 2017. Our tennis facilities were named for him in 2005, since then referred to as the “Dave Hawley Tennis Complex.”
Coach Hawley has always run his program with a “no-cut” policy. He spent his summers teaching lessons to kids as young as three years old, working hard to introduce his beloved sport to as many as possible. As our Spartans grew up and chose to play for him, he worked hard to find matches for anyone who wanted to play on the team. We as a school will always be grateful for all he has done for our students, both as a Hall of Fame coach, but also as an educator. Coach Hawley has taught history for 48 years at Wichita Collegiate, being named a “Distinguished Teacher” by the Kansas Association of Independent and Religious Schools in 2004.
